Lesson 03 · Expression of Ideas

Rhetorical Synthesis: Part 2

In this lesson, you will learn to

  • Handle rhetorical synthesis questions aimed at an audience familiar or unfamiliar with the topic.
  • Write effective generalizations, and support them when a question asks for evidence.
  • Spot and avoid superficial answer choices that only appear to accomplish the goal.

Rhetorical synthesis questions occasionally indicate that you are presenting information to an audience unfamiliar with some aspect of the topic. This may be phrased as "an audience unfamiliar with…" or "a new audience".

🔎For example:

The student wants to describe the painting to an audience unfamiliar with Norman Rockwell.

The student wants to introduce the researcher and his experiment to a new audience.

If you see prompts like the ones above, you will need to provide the audience with context that will help them understand some aspect of the topic discussed.

For example, if a person is mentioned, the correct answer needs to provide some information about who that person is.

It may mention, for example, the person's profession (e.g., that they are an author or artist); their nationality (e.g., Nigerian or Chinese American); or one of their major accomplishments (e.g., they are a Nobel prize winner).

🔎For example:

✅ B) American artist Norman Rockwell's painting Freedom from Want depicts a warm Thanksgiving gathering, centered around a grandly served turkey.
🔎Here's a test-style example question:

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • Fado is a traditional form of Portuguese singing, often performed in pubs and cafés.
  • Though its origins are disputed, Fado is generally thought to have evolved in the early 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon.
  • Fado lyrics often express feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia, reflecting the struggles of the urban poor.
  • The singer, usually accompanied by a classical guitar and a Portuguese guitar, performs seated and does not dance.
  • In 2011, Fado was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The student wants to introduce the emotions conveyed by Fado to an audience unfamiliar with it. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • A. A traditional form of Portuguese singing, Fado is thought to have evolved in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon and is often performed in pubs and cafés.
  • B. In 2011, Fado, which expresses feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia, was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
  • C. Fado, a traditional form of Portuguese singing, has lyrics that are associated with feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia.
  • D. In the early 19th century, Fado evolved in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon; it often expresses feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia.

Answer: C. “Fado, a traditional form of Portuguese singing, has lyrics that are associated with feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia.” is the best answer. The sentence effectively describes the emotions conveyed by Fado ("feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia") to an audience unfamiliar with Fado, explaining that it is "a traditional form of Portuguese singing".

❌ “A traditional form of Portuguese singing, Fado is thought to have evolved in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon and is often performed in pubs and cafés.” is incorrect. This choice mentions the origins and evolution of Fado, but it doesn't mention the emotions conveyed by Fado.

❌ “In 2011, Fado, which expresses feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia, was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.” is incorrect. While this choice introduces the emotions conveyed by Fado, it doesn't explain what Fado is to an audience that is unfamiliar with it.

✅ “Fado, a traditional form of Portuguese singing, has lyrics that are associated with feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia.” is the best answer. The sentence effectively describes the emotions conveyed by Fado ("feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia") to an audience unfamiliar with Fado, explaining that it is "a traditional form of Portuguese singing".

❌ “In the early 19th century, Fado evolved in the working-class neighborhoods of Lisbon; it often expresses feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia.” is incorrect. This choice mentions the emotions conveyed by Fado and its origins, but it doesn't explain what Fado is to an audience that is unfamiliar with it.

Familiar audience-style rhetorical synthesis questions include the phrase "audience already familiar with".

🔎For example:

The student wants to introduce Leslie Chang's articles to an audience already familiar with her

The student wants to present the study to an audience already familiar with DNA-based storage technologies.

If the audience is already familiar with something, you should not provide details about it. For example, if you're told that the audience is familiar with a person, the correct answer should not mention that person's nationality or profession.

🔎A wrong answer choice may look like this:

❌ A) Chinese American journalist Leslie Chang's articles describe the lives of Chinese women who work in factories.

Likewise, if you're told that the audience is already familiar with a scientific topic, the correct answer should not provide any details about what that topic is.

🔎A wrong answer choice may look like this:

❌ B) The study examined the longevity of DNA-based storage technologies, which use synthesized strands of DNA to encode and decode binary data.
🔎Here's a somewhat challenging test-style question:

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • Auguste Escoffier was a French chef who modernized and organized French cuisine during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • He developed the "brigade de cuisine," a system of kitchen organization that assigns each worker a specific role.
  • Escoffier simplified and lightened traditional French dishes by reducing the use of heavy sauces and emphasizing the use of fresh ingredients.
  • He also created many new dishes, some of which were named after his famous contemporaries.
  • Escoffier's approach and innovations had a major influence on the culinary world, with many of his methods still being used today.

The student wants to explain how Escoffier updated French cuisine to an audience already familiar with him. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • A. Auguste Escoffier, an influential French chef, created many new dishes, some of which were named after his famous contemporaries.
  • B. Auguste Escoffier developed a system of kitchen organization that assigns each worker a specific role, thereby modernizing French cuisine.
  • C. Auguste Escoffier modernized and organized French cuisine, and his approach and innovations had a major influence on the culinary world.
  • D. A French chef active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Auguste Escoffier modernized French cuisine by developing the "brigade de cuisine".

Answer: B. “Auguste Escoffier developed a system of kitchen organization that assigns each worker a specific role, thereby modernizing French cuisine.” is the best answer since it explains how Auguste Escoffier modernized French cuisine (by "develop[ing]... a system of kitchen organization"); moreover, it assumes the audience is familiar with Escoffier and doesn't provide any background information about him.

❌ “Auguste Escoffier, an influential French chef, created many new dishes, some of which were named after his famous contemporaries.” is incorrect. This sentence isn't suitable for an audience already familiar with Escoffier. A familiar audience wouldn't need to be told that Escoffier was "a French chef".

✅ “Auguste Escoffier developed a system of kitchen organization that assigns each worker a specific role, thereby modernizing French cuisine.” is the best answer since it explains how Auguste Escoffier modernized French cuisine (by "develop[ing]... a system of kitchen organization"); moreover, it assumes the audience is familiar with Escoffier and doesn't provide any background information about him.

❌ “Auguste Escoffier modernized and organized French cuisine, and his approach and innovations had a major influence on the culinary world.” is incorrect. This sentence simply states that Escoffier "modernized and organized" French cuisine, but it doesn't mention how he did so.

❌ “A French chef active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Auguste Escoffier modernized French cuisine by developing the "brigade de cuisine".” is incorrect. This sentence isn't suitable for an audience already familiar with Escoffier. A familiar audience wouldn't need to be told that Escoffier was "a French chef".

⚠️ WarningGeneralization-style rhetorical synthesis questions are among the most difficult rhetorical synthesis questions. Be especially cautious as you solve them.

Some rhetorical synthesis questions ask you to make (or make and support) a generalization about a topic.

🔎For example:

The student wants to make a generalization about jazz music.

A generalization is a broad statement about a topic; it should not include any specific details. In other words, you should not include specific names, numbers, or overly detailed descriptions.

Instead, the correct answer will be a broad statement.

🔎A wrong answer choice may look like this:

❌ A) Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was a major figure in the development of jazz.

This choice is wrong because it mentions a specific jazz artist, rather than making a broad statement about jazz music.

🔎Here's another example of a wrong answer choice:

❌ B) Jazz trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong were both skilled at 'scat' style singing.

Again, this choice focuses too much on specific examples, rather than making a broad statement about jazz music.

🔎A correct answer choice may look like this:

✅ C) Jazz music often emphasizes improvisation.

This statement is broad, providing a general statement that does not include specific details.

🔎Here's a straightforward test-style question:

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • A Rubik's Cube is a 3D combination puzzle in which players aim to align all faces to one uniform color.
  • The standard Rubik's Cube is a 3x3x3 puzzle cube with six colors.
  • The 4x4x4 version of the Rubik's Cube is known as the Rubik's Revenge.
  • The Megaminx is a dodecahedron-shaped Rubik's Cube with 12 faces and both 6- and 12-color varieties.

The student wants to make a generalization about Rubik's Cube puzzles. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • A. Examples of Rubik's Cube puzzles include the 3x3x3 standard cube and the Megaminx.
  • B. The standard Rubik's Cube is 3x3x3, but the Rubik's Revenge is 4x4x4.
  • C. Rubik's Cube puzzles come in various shapes and forms.
  • D. While the standard Rubik's Cube is a cube, the Megaminx is dodecahedron-shaped.

Answer: C. “Rubik's Cube puzzles come in various shapes and forms.” is the best answer. This is the only choice that makes a generalization about Rubik's Cube puzzles.

❌ “Examples of Rubik's Cube puzzles include the 3x3x3 standard cube and the Megaminx.” is incorrect. This sentence mentions specific examples of Rubik's Cube puzzles, but it doesn't talk about Rubik's Cube puzzles in general.

❌ “The standard Rubik's Cube is 3x3x3, but the Rubik's Revenge is 4x4x4.” is incorrect. This sentence contrasts two types of Rubik's Cube puzzles, but it doesn't say anything general about Rubik's Cube puzzles.

✅ “Rubik's Cube puzzles come in various shapes and forms.” is the best answer. This is the only choice that makes a generalization about Rubik's Cube puzzles.

❌ “While the standard Rubik's Cube is a cube, the Megaminx is dodecahedron-shaped.” is incorrect. This choice contrasts two types of Rubik's Cube puzzles, but it doesn't talk about them as a category.

Some rhetorical synthesis questions ask you to make and support a generalization about a topic.

🔎For example:

The student wants to make and support a generalization about historical Apache cultures.

To "support" a generalization, you need to provide evidence for that generalization. In other words, you must back up your broad statements with specific facts or data that directly relate to and reinforce the generalization.

🔎A wrong answer may look like this:

❌ A) Historical Apache cultures were nomadic.

This choice provides a generalization, but it does not support that generalization with any specific facts or data.

🔎A correct answer may look like this:

✅ B) Historical Apache cultures were nomadic, with tribes moving up to hundreds of miles per year to follow seasonal resources across the American Southwest.

This choice provides a generalization ("Historical Apache cultures were nomadic"), and then it provides evidence that that generalization is accurate ("tribes mov[ed] … American Southwest").

🔎Here's a test-style question:

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • Urban gardening is the practice of growing plants in cities, often in small spaces like balconies, rooftops, or community plots.
  • Urban gardens can produce up to 20 kg of food per square meter annually.
  • A study in Detroit found that urban gardeners saved an average of $900 per household on food costs.
  • Urban community gardens have been linked to a 10-15% increase in property values within a 1000-foot radius.
  • A survey showed that 67% of urban gardeners reported feeling more connected to their communities.

The student wants to make and support a generalization about the impact of urban gardening. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • A. Urban gardening has wide-ranging positive impacts on cities and their residents.
  • B. Urban gardening is the practice of growing plants in cities, and 67% of urban gardeners reported feeling more connected to their communities.
  • C. Urban gardens, which are often in small spaces like balconies, rooftops, or community plots, can produce up to 20 kg of food per square meter annually.
  • D. Urban gardening can provide significant benefits to participants: a study in Detroit found that urban gardeners saved an average of $900 per household on food costs.

Answer: D. “Urban gardening can provide significant benefits to participants: a study in Detroit found that urban gardeners saved an average of $900 per household on food costs.” is the best answer. The sentence makes a generalization about the impact of urban gardening—that it provides significant benefits to participants—and then supports this generalization with specific evidence from the notes: the study in Detroit showing average household savings of $900 on food costs.

❌ “Urban gardening has wide-ranging positive impacts on cities and their residents.” is incorrect. While it does make a generalization about the impact of urban gardening, it fails to support the generalization with any specific evidence from the notes.

❌ “Urban gardening is the practice of growing plants in cities, and 67% of urban gardeners reported feeling more connected to their communities.” is incorrect. While it defines urban gardening and provides specific facts about the results of a survey indicating that urban gardeners feel more connected to their communities, it doesn't make a generalization about the impact of urban gardening.

❌ “Urban gardens, which are often in small spaces like balconies, rooftops, or community plots, can produce up to 20 kg of food per square meter annually.” is incorrect. This sentence does not make a generalization about the broader impacts of urban gardening. It merely states a specific fact about the productivity of urban gardens.

✅ “Urban gardening can provide significant benefits to participants: a study in Detroit found that urban gardeners saved an average of $900 per household on food costs.” is the best answer. The sentence makes a generalization about the impact of urban gardening—that it provides significant benefits to participants—and then supports this generalization with specific evidence from the notes: the study in Detroit showing average household savings of $900 on food costs.

💡 TipKeywords and phrases that can indicate that information is "supporting" a generalization include: "[for] example", "for instance", "as the example…", "as [was] the case…", "since" and "because". Since colons (:) are often used to set up explanations and elaborations, a colon can also be a clue that an answer choice contains support for a generalization. For more information, see Lesson 13: Colons and Dashes.
💡 TipWrong answer choices often simply restate key terms from the question you're being asked.
🔎For example:

The student wants to describe the distinctive style of Wright's architecture. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?
🔎A wrong answer choice may look like this:

❌ A) American architect Frank Lloyd Wright developed a distinctive architectural style.

This choice uses the same words as the question—"Frank Lloyd Wright" and "distinctive architectural style"—which might make it seem relevant.

However, it's too vague and doesn't provide any specific information about what makes Wright's architectural style unique. It essentially restates the question without answering it.

Make sure to compare each answer choice carefully and confirm it provides the detail requested rather than simply reusing keywords from the question.

🔎A correct answer choice may look like this:

✅ B) Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style is characterized by the use of horizontal lines that mimic the natural landscape.
⚠️ WarningFor most rhetorical synthesis questions, you can skip directly to the questions without reading the bullet points. However, there are times when you need to read the bullet points, especially in the last few questions of the hard module. These questions may include answer choices that incorrectly represent details from the bullet points.
🔎Here's a somewhat tricky example question:

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • Bagan is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar and was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom from the 9th to 13th centuries.
  • The city is known for its remarkable density and variety of Buddhist art and architecture.
  • At the height of the Kingdom's prosperity, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone.
  • The Bagan Archaeological Zone, defined as the 13 x 8 km area centered around Old Bagan, consists of the highest concentration of these structures, with over 2,000.
  • Among the most famous in Bagan are the Ananda Temple, known for its Mon-style architecture, and the Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest temple in the area.

The student wants to specify how many Buddhist religious structures are within the Bagan Archaeological Zone. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • A. At the height of the Pagan Kingdom's prosperity, the Bagan Archaeological Zone had over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries.
  • B. Once the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, Bagan is an ancient city in Myanmar, renowned for its density and variety of Buddhist religious structures.
  • C. The Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest in Bagan, is one of over 2,000 Buddhist religious structures in the Bagan Archaeological Zone.
  • D. The Ananda Temple in Bagan is known for its Mon-style architecture, one of the many architectural styles found in the Bagan Archaeological Zone.

Answer: C. “The Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest in Bagan, is one of over 2,000 Buddhist religious structures in the Bagan Archaeological Zone.” is correct. This is the only option that directly states the number—over 2,000—of Buddhist religious structures within the Bagan Archaeological Zone.

❌ “At the height of the Pagan Kingdom's prosperity, the Bagan Archaeological Zone had over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries.” is incorrect. Although it references over 10,000 temples, pagodas, and monasteries, that figure applies to the entire Bagan plains at the kingdom's height—not specifically to the Bagan Archaeological Zone.

❌ “Once the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, Bagan is an ancient city in Myanmar, renowned for its density and variety of Buddhist religious structures.” is incorrect. This choice doesn't specify the number of structures.

✅ “The Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest in Bagan, is one of over 2,000 Buddhist religious structures in the Bagan Archaeological Zone.” is correct. This is the only option that directly states the number—over 2,000—of Buddhist religious structures within the Bagan Archaeological Zone.

❌ “The Ananda Temple in Bagan is known for its Mon-style architecture, one of the many architectural styles found in the Bagan Archaeological Zone.” is incorrect. This choice doesn't specify the number of structures.

💡 TipTo answer this question correctly, you needed to read the bullet points.
💡 Final Tips
  • Focus on the goal. Ensure the answer accomplishes what "The student wants to…"
  • Use keywords. Look for contrast words (however, whereas) for differences and similarity words (both, like) for similarities.
  • Generalizations: Avoid specific details; provide evidence if required.
  • Avoid traps: Watch for answers that paraphrase the question, misstate details, or only partially meet the goal.

This sentence directly addresses the student's goal, explaining that the name "Bluetooth" was chosen for the technology because it reflects King Harald Bluetooth's ability to unite diverse Danish tribes, in the same way that the technology allows various devices to communicate with each other.

✅ “The name "Bluetooth" was chosen for the technology that connects various devices, reflecting King Harald Bluetooth's ability to unite diverse Danish tribes.” is the best answer. This sentence directly addresses the student's goal, explaining that the name "Bluetooth" was chosen for the technology because it reflects King Harald Bluetooth's ability to unite diverse Danish tribes, in the same way that the technology allows various devices to communicate with each other.

❌ “Bluetooth technology, named after King Harald Bluetooth, enables different devices to communicate and work together.” is incorrect. While it does mention that Bluetooth technology was named after King Harald Bluetooth, it doesn't explain why the technology was named after the king.

❌ “King Harald Bluetooth, a 10th-century king who united diverse Danish tribes, inspired the name for Bluetooth, a wireless technology.” is incorrect. This sentence, while it does link King Harald Bluetooth to the technology named after him, does not clearly explain why the technology was named after the king.

❌ “The essential function of Bluetooth technology, symbolized by the name "Bluetooth," is to enable diverse devices to work together.” is incorrect. This sentence discusses the function of Bluetooth technology but does not explicitly connect this function to why the technology was named after King Harald Bluetooth.

Answer: C. “Using profits from the gold-salt trade, the Berbers were able to build flourishing cities like Marrakech and Timbuktu.” is the best answer. This sentence effectively highlights how the Berbers' participation in the gold-salt trade led to the development of thriving cities, like Marrakech and Timbuktu.

❌ “The Berbers, indigenous people of North Africa, were integral to trans-Saharan trade during the Middle Ages, as their knowledge of the desert and its routes facilitated the movement of goods.” is incorrect because it focuses on the Berbers' role in facilitating trans-Saharan trade, rather than the impact of this trade on the development of cities.

❌ “The Berbers' introduction of camels to North Africa greatly enhanced their ability to participate in the trans-Saharan trade, specifically in the gold-salt trade.” is incorrect because it primarily discusses the role of camels in the Berbers' trade activities, not the impact of their trade on city development.

✅ “Using profits from the gold-salt trade, the Berbers were able to build flourishing cities like Marrakech and Timbuktu.” is the best answer. This sentence effectively highlights how the Berbers' participation in the gold-salt trade led to the development of thriving cities, like Marrakech and Timbuktu.

❌ “The Berbers' knowledge of desert routes and the use of camels as a mode of transportation were key elements in the success of the trans-Saharan trade.” is incorrect because it focuses on the Berbers' contribution to trans-Saharan trade, rather than how the trade profits were used to develop cities.

Question 4 of 16.

  • D. Neurobiologist Kenta Asahina's research on fruit flies focused on understanding the neural circuitry of aggression and used the technique of optogenetics.

Answer: C. “Kenta Asahina discovered specific neurons that increase aggressive behavior in male fruit flies.” is the best answer. It clearly states the study's primary result—that Asahina "discovered specific neurons that increase aggressive behavior in male fruit flies." This aligns directly with bullet point 3, which describes the main finding of the research.

❌ “Kenta Asahina's research provides insight into the fundamental neural circuitry of aggression.” is incorrect. Although it mentions that Asahina's work provides insight into aggression's neural circuitry, it does not directly state the study's primary finding.

❌ “In his research on aggression in fruit flies, Kenta Asahina used optogenetics to manipulate neuron activity.” is incorrect. This choice highlights the methodology—using optogenetics—but does not mention what was discovered.

✅ “Kenta Asahina discovered specific neurons that increase aggressive behavior in male fruit flies.” is the best answer. It clearly states the study's primary result—that Asahina "discovered specific neurons that increase aggressive behavior in male fruit flies." This aligns directly with bullet point 3, which describes the main finding of the research.

❌ “Neurobiologist Kenta Asahina's research on fruit flies focused on understanding the neural circuitry of aggression and used the technique of optogenetics.” is incorrect. It describes the focus of the study and the technique used (optogenetics), but it does not give the main result—identifying the specific neurons responsible for aggression.

Question 6 of 16.

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes:

  • Filipino nurses have been migrating to the US since the early 20th century.
